Favorite Christmas Movies

Christmas movies warm the heart. They can take you back to a time that was so simple and humble. It can be a way to introduce you child to America’s history and the way life was. A way to truly soak in the deep meaning of Christmas, love and giving. Also a time to just enjoy some lighthearted fun and memory making with the family. Christmas time is such a fun time to snuggle under a blanket, drink something hot, have the fire going and pop some popcorn.

We have not had a TV for several years and I don’t miss it~ except a little at Christmas. Hallmark Christmas movies are special. There is just too  much junk available on that box. But we love DVDs of older shows, the classics.  When we do watch TV~ it is old shows. We love the Leave it to Beaver and Hazel era. A different America.

We prefer the classics….for many reasons. Here are some of our favorites {in no particular order} that you may want to give a try this year or add to your collection:

 

 

It’s a Wonderful Life

I don’t think this Christmas classic needs any introduction, but here you go… George Bailey has so many problems he is thinking about ending it all – and it’s Christmas! As the angels discuss George, we see his life in flashback. As George is about to jump from a bridge, he ends up rescuing his guardian angel, Clarence. Clarence then shows George what his town would have looked like if it hadn’t been for all of his good deeds over the years. Will Clarence be able to convince George to return to his family and forget suicide?

 

 

 

 

Christmas Candle
This is the It’s a Wonderful Life of our generation. Neither movie was a blockbuster in the theaters, but Christmas Candle will join It’s a Wonderful Life as a Christmas Classic for years to come. The story from bestselling storyteller, Max Lucado is a great foundation combines with a wonderful cast of British actors, beautiful period sets and scenery and inspiring music from Susan Boyle to truly satisfy our Christmas movie appetite.

This movie is unlike almost all other Christmas movies. Can you name a Christmas movie, other than a nativity story, that is actually about Christmas? Candle is actually about the miracle of Christmas, not Santa or the commercial sentimental Christmas. Like Christmas, Candle is about Christ with us and what that miracle means to each of us in our lives. Enjoy finally be able to experience a real Christmas movie that will entertain and inspire.

Little House on Prairie: Merry Ingalls Christmas

Who doesn’t love Little House on the Prairie? This DVD includes: “Christmas at Plum Creek”  (Season 1) The Ingalls are just settling in to their in new home in Walnut Grove and are low on shopping funds to buy gifts for each other,but in a house filled with love that shouldn’t be a problem should it? Each member of the Ingalls family finds unique way to make/give a christmas gift for their family members.

The second Christmas episode included is “A Christmas they never forgot” ( Season 8)
The Ingalls kids are all grown up now and snowed in at Christmas time and share stories of Christmas’s past with each other.

Love’s Christmas Journey

I love the Love Comes Softly Series….the books and the movies. I grew up reading the books and was thrilled with the series! This is the first Christmas movie in the series.  Still mourning the loss of her family, Ellie agrees to watch her brother’s children when he has to leave town. When a fire is set, Ellie works with a handsome deputy to clear a friends name and learns that if she can trust her faith, this Christmas may bring more miracles than she hoped.

 

 

 

 

A Christmas Wish

A heartwarming holiday classic about a family who is down on their luck at Christmas time. Shortly before Christmas, they move into an apartment where Rupert the squirrel lives in the attic rafters and acts as the family’s guardian angel not only saving Christmas, but changing their lives forever. Enlivened with an unforgettable love story between Terry Moore  and Tom DrakeRupert the Squirrel (created using George Pal’s Academy Award winning animation) will charm young and old alike. It Happened on 5th Avenue


The movie is set in New York City right after World War 2. The characters include a rich guy, who prides himself on being “the second richest guy in the world” and thinks he has everything. Rich guy has a pampered EX-wife who lives in Florida. There is also a spoiled daughter who has been shipped off to boarding school.  He is happy with all his wealth, but in reality, the only thing he has to show for his life is his stomach ulcer. It is not until an unlikely set of circumstances combine with an unusual cast of additional characters (a middle-aged hobo, a young guy fresh out of the military who is looking for a job and an apartment, along with some other supporting characters) that the “rich guy” finds out the true meaning of life in the post-World War II housing crunch take over an abandoned New York City mansion.

 

 

 

 Christmas in Connecticut (1945)

Barbara Stanwyck plays a magazine columnist totally devoid of the homemaking skills espoused in her column had better get some fast: her boss has invited himself and a recently returned war hero to her home for Christmas. Laughs, romance, holiday cheer: that’s the recipe Barbara Stanwyck and a stellar company follow in this perennial favorite.

 

 

The Shop Around The Corner

 Margaret Sullavan and James Stewart engage in retail romance. They play bickering store clerks who are unknowingly secret pen pals. Your patronage will be cheerfully rewarded when you watch this enchanting tale.  You may know the story better as the modern version You’ve Got Mail This movie also resulted in In the Good Old Summertime.

 

 

 

 

A Christmas Carol

Charles Dickens’ holiday humbug.  From sets to stars to story, this triumphant adaptation adds a glow to the season. Like Tiny Tim’s benediction, it blesses us – every one.

 This is another classic that needs no introduction. Enjoy getting into the spirit of Christmas, reconnecting with friends, making new ones, working together to brighten someone’s day and lift their load a little. A movie I enjoy…except for that weird dance scene in the middle, lol.

 

 

 

 

 

  

Going My Way 

Bing Crosby is crooning priest who joins the parish of a no-nonsense but sweet old Irish man of the cloth . While Bing turns local toughs into a choir, the elder priest worries over the church building fund and whether he’ll get a chance to see his old mother back in Ireland before she dies. One would have to have a heart of stone not to be won over by this charmer.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Bells of St. Mary’s

Witty, heartwarming and one of the most beloved classics of all time, The Bells of St. Mary’s delivers all the entertainment of its predecessor,  Going My Way. Bing Crosby recreates his  role as parish priest Father O’Malley. The easy-going O’Malley is sent to revive a financially ailing parochial school and immediately finds himself at odds with no-nonsense Sister Benedict (Ingrid Bergman) on how to educate the children. Beyond their delightful battle of wits lies a bigger problem–the skinflint businessman next door  wants St. Mary’s condemned, so he can build a parking lot for his employees. Only a miracle can save St. Mary’s now . how a devilish situation finds a heavenly solution remains to be seen in this captivating family classic.

 

 

 

Holiday Affair
